Angel Mine
Chapter Nine
Peter Gabriel crooned the words of sorrow in his song “Grieve,” and each word brought more sadness through the speakers of their vehicle. Adam looked at his downtrodden friends as they drove out of the city. He reached over to turn the station, but Iris’s hand clasped his to stop him.
“Leave it. It seems fitting.” Her request was so quiet that he almost did not hear her.
Iris was leaning her head against the glass of the SUV. Her eyes were fixed forward, and she did not say a word. He raised his eyes to the rearview mirror and looked at Collin. His eyes were closed, and his lips moved in silent prayer while he worked the rosary beads he gripped tightly in his hands. Adam knew this was his only source of comfort. His faith was the only way he could explain what had happened.
“She knew this was going to happen, you know,” Iris said quietly. Her voice was emotionless.
“What, honey?” Adam glanced at Iris before placing his eyes back on the road. He didn’t need to be stopped for erratic driving on the New Jersey turnpike.
“She knew she was going to die.” Iris shook her head sadly. “I think she had a premonition about it. That’s when she gave me the address. I-I should’ve pressed her more, made her tell you or something. Maybe we could have stopped it from happening and she’d be here right now.”
“You can’t fight destiny.” Collin’s low voice full of grief came from the back seat. “It was Neela’s time, and if she knew that, she couldn’t stop it. None of us could.”
Iris whirled around to face him angrily. “How can you say that? If you knew she was going to die, wouldn’t you have tried to save her?”
“Iris,” Adam warned softly. He knew she was angry and grieving inside. She couldn’t lash out at any of the things that had killed Neela so the person closest to them was taking the brunt of her anger.
“It’s okay, Adam.” Collin’s red-rimmed stare met his in the rearview mirror. “Iris, if I had known that Neela’s path was this one, I would have gladly taken her place. But this played out as it was meant to. I have to believe there is some higher purpose for her death. If not, I wouldn’t be able to survive this, myself. So, we go on and we fight, for her, and for everyone, so her death is not in vain.”
Adam watched Iris’s bottom lip tremble and tears spill from her eyes.
“I’m sorry, Collin,” she whispered and held out her hand to him.
The lyrics of the song changed to some of renewed hope. They all listened quietly to the words Peter Gabriel sang. The second verse began to uplift and sing of hope. As the song went on, the grieving man who still had his faith took her hand in a firm gasp and clutched it for dear life. His eyes widened and Collin gasped and sent a startled look in Adam’s direction.
